Leon’s journey: From NCUK to Auckland University of Technology and beyond
Posted:
For Leon, studying abroad was a dream he had nurtured for years. He always wanted to come to New Zealand, but he wasn’t sure how to make it happen. That changed when he discovered NCUK, which gave him the tools, support and pathway to turn his dream into reality. With a strong foundation from NCUK, Leon found himself at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), drawn by its modern facilities and practically focused approach to learning.
“My teacher at Shenyang International Study Centre told me that NCUK would make everything easier. I wouldn’t have to do all the research myself – NCUK provides all the information and even helps with the visa application. It was the perfect bridge between China and New Zealand,” Leon recalls.
The NCUK advantage
Leon credits NCUK with preparing him well for the academic challenges at AUT. Through NCUK, he studied subjects like English, business, economics, and mathematics – all taught in English, which gave him a head start in adapting to university lectures.
“Listening to lectures in English was difficult at first, but NCUK helped me get used to it. By the time I arrived at AUT, I was already familiar with the language and study style,” he says.
Beyond study, NCUK also provided Leon with a clear direction and pathway. One of his NCUK classmates joined him at AUT, and that connection helped him settle in quickly.
”Having someone I knew here made the transition easier, but AUT is so welcoming that I felt at home right away,” he adds.
Settling into life at AUT
Arriving in Auckland, Leon found a city that was both beautiful and diverse. He embraced his new environment, making friends from all over the world and exploring New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes.
“I love going to the beach and climbing hills. Shakespeare Park near Auckland is one of my favourite places,” he shares. Living in shared student apartments, I have lots of friends to hang out with. It feels like a home away from home.”
One of the biggest adjustments for Leon was improving his English.
“At NCUK, I could still speak Chinese sometimes. But at AUT, everything is in English. At first, I wasn’t confident, but my English has improved a lot,” he says.
His advice to other international students? “Just speak up, even if your English isn’t perfect. If you want to make friends, just talk. Talking is not a difficult thing for me.”
Academic success and future goals
Leon’s academic journey at AUT has been rewarding, with standout experiences in courses like a recent programming techniques and concepts course.
“My teacher was really good. He used lots of examples and recommended different methods. I got an A+ in that course!” he says proudly.
Looking ahead, Leon is eager to gain more work experience. He has attended career fairs and is set to participate in a volunteer programme organised by AUT Employability and Careers Service.
“This experience will help me build my skills and connections for the future,” he says.
Advice for future NCUK students
For students considering the NCUK route, Leon offers simple but valuable advice:
“Follow NCUK’s suggestions. They help with everything – university choices, visas and study plans. Without them, I would have had to do everything on my own.”
As for AUT, Leon describes it in three words: “Welcoming, supportive, professional.”
He appreciates the university’s academic resources and the patience of his teachers.
“Whenever I have a question, my teacher responds quickly by email. The AUT website has all the information I need, and if I struggle with academic writing, I can log in for assistance.”
Leon’s story is one of resilience, adaptation and success. From a strong NCUK foundation to settling in at AUT, he has made the most of every opportunity.
His journey highlights why the NCUK-AUT pathway is a great choice for international students, offering a supportive environment that helps students achieve their goals and feel at home in New Zealand.
NCUK students transferring to AUT are eligible for a $NZ 10,000 Scholarship.
