Making Friends at University

Posted:

Starting university is exciting… but let’s be real, it can also feel a little overwhelming – especially when it comes to making new friends! Whether you’re studying close to home or miles away, finding your people takes time. The good news? You’re not alone, and everyone’s in the same boat – looking to connect, build friendships, and feel like they belong.

1. Start Conversations with Your Coursemates

Everyone’s new and probably just as nervous. Don’t be afraid to break the ice. A simple “Hey, what did you think of that lecture?” can go a long way.

2. Join a Sports Society and Attend Socials

Participating in sports clubs is a great way to meet new people. Attend weekly socials and Freshers Week events —they’re designed to help you make friends.

“Universities have societies for nearly every interest, academic, cultural, hobby-based, or sports-related. This is one of the easiest ways to meet people with shared interests.”

3. Get Involved with the International Society

These groups host fun, welcoming events and are a great way to meet people from similar backgrounds or discover new cultures.

“Join the international society! They have so many events and maybe you can find some people from your same background.”

4. Attend Orientation and Welcome Events

These events are made for meeting new people. Everyone’s in the same boat, so take the chance to mingle during campus tours, games, and welcome socials.

5. Make the Most of Your Accommodation

Living in halls or shared housing? Don’t just stay in your room. Invite your flatmates for dinner, movie nights, or group grocery runs – it’s an easy way to bond.

6. Volunteer or Work On Campus

Campus jobs and volunteering roles let you meet people across different faculties and backgrounds while contributing to student life.

7. Join Online Groups

Whether it’s a class WhatsApp chat or a university Discord server, online groups are a great way to connect with others, even before you meet in person.

8. Join a Study Group

Studying together is a great way to bond naturally while also staying on top of your coursework. It’s a win-win.

9. Attend Cultural or Food Festivals on Campus

These events are usually casual, social, and full of people open to meeting new friends—plus, free snacks help.

10. Be Patient with the Process

Not every connection becomes a best friend overnight. Give friendships time to grow, and don’t be discouraged if it takes a while.

Making friends at university isn’t about having the perfect social life right away-it’s about showing up, being open, and giving connections time to grow. Be patient with yourself, and remember: the best friendships often start in the most unexpected ways.
